Classic Mint Julep Cocktail

This cool cocktail, known for its southern roots, is a favorite at the Kentucky Derby and is traditionally served in a silver cup.

Ingredients

  • 3
    fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2
    ounce mint simple syrup
  • Ice
  • 2
    ounces bourbon
  • 1
    fresh mint sprig, for garnish

For the mint simple syrup:

  • 1
    cup sugar
  • 1
    cup water
  • 10-12
    fresh mint sprigs

Directions

    TO make the mint simple syrup: Bring sugar and water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Boil, stirring often, 5 minutes or until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat; add mint, and let cool completely. Pour into a glass jar; cover and chill 24 hours. Remove and discard mint.

    Place mint leaves and Mint Simple Syrup in a chilled glass. Gently press leaves against glass with back of spoon to release flavors. Pack glass tightly with crushed ice; pour bourbon over ice. Garnish with mint sprig.
